On August 9, the ’’Awareness Raising through Environmental Education in the Mekong Delta’’ conference was held by the ICMP-CCCEP program (GIZ Bac Lieu) together with Can Tho University in Can Tho. In total 132 participants, ranging from practitioners to teacher students from different institutes and professions were attending the conference. At the display area, diverse environmental education materials, posters, books from different GIZ projects, NGOs (Live & Learn, Room to Read), and institutions were also presented.

At the welcome remarks, Prof. Le Trong Hung from the Ministry of Education and Training expressed high appreciation and approval for the Environmental Education Material Set that has been developed by GIZ and the Teacher Working Group in Bac Lieu province. “Teacher Working Group Approach and Integration of Environmental Education in Secondary and High School in Bac Lieu Province” was presented by the representative from DOET, Bac Lieu. Then, examples of integrating environmental education in different subjects were presented by three teachers in Biology, Geography and Civic Education, who were also authors of the materials and member of the Teacher Working Group.

After tea-break, examples of environmental education/awareness activities from different GIZ projects in the Mekong Delta (Soc Trang, Kien Giang, An Giang) and integration of Education for Sustainable Development at the School of Education in Can Tho university were presented.

After lunch break, a dynamic panel discussion with expert participation from MOET, ICMP/CCCEP, CTU, Live & Learn, Room to Read (NGOs) was taken place. The main outcomes show a need to harmonize and distribute what have been developed so far, to set up and train a network of practitioners and to further exchange experience and lesson learned. New knowledge has to come into action and change attitude towards behaviour changes.

‘We still have a long way to go, but we are on the right track.’
