About our symposium

“Ho Chi Minh City, 18-19 November 2013. More than 200 participants from Vietnamese ministries, government agencies, academics and national and international NGOs from Viet Nam, Germany, the Philippines and Fiji came together on Tuesday in HCMC for the symposium “Adaptation to Climate Change in the Coastal Zone of Soc Trang Province”. The event was organized by the Vietnamese-German cooperation project “Management of Natural Resources in the coastal zone of Soc Trang Province”, which is implemented by the German International Cooperation (GIZ). The one-day event focused on the four key topics of mangrove rehabilitation, mangrove management, Integrated Coastal Management and erosion protection through bamboo wavebreakers plus an extra session on environmental awareness.

The symposium presented experiences and lessons learnt from 6 years of project implementation in Soc Trang province. It also provided a forum to connect adaptation practitioners and a wide range of stakeholders. The evaluation of pilot adaptation practices in Soc Trang showed promising results that can be applied elsewhere in the region.“The project will wrap up by 2014. We can take those solutions that work and upscale them to all five provinces in the Mekong Delta including An Giang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, and Soc Trang.” Klaus Schmitt, Chief Technical Advisor, GIZ Soc Trang.

In 2014, the Soc Trang project will become a component of a larger programme, which is co-financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Australian Government. The programme is then operating in the five Mekong Delta provinces of An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Kien Giang and Soc Trang.” (Source CZM ST)
