Reception on 18.11.2013

Palace Hotel, 18.11.2013

Launching of our new publication “Shoreline Management Guidelines: Coastal Protection in the Lower Mekong Delta” and handing over of the Geodatabase.

“The database which was developed by the Vietnamese – German technical cooperation project in Soc Trang, contains historical maps of Soc Trang’s coastline, dating back to 1904. Some of the maps could not be found in Vietnam and had to be traced back to the archives in France. Shoreline changes can often only be understood after a long period of time. This database was now officially handed over to Soc Trang province and provides an insight into changes that have taken place over many years which aids planning site-specific measures to protect the shoreline. It is planned to expand the database to the other coastal Mekong Delta provinces of Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang.

The new guidelines titled "Shoreline Management Guidelines: Coastal Protection in the Lower Mekong Delta" are written for planners and decision-makers who should use the guidelines for the selection of site specific and appropriate erosion protection measures. They are aimed to support decision-makers in dealing with the protection and management of Viet Nam’s coasts. “The guidelines and the database are tools that help us making informed and cost-effective decisions for our coasts” summarized Mr. Lê Thanh Hải, vice-chairman of Soc Trang People’s Council.” (Source: CZM ST)
