On July 4th and 5th the
Department of
Agriculture and Rural
Development (DARD) of Soc Trang and the Vietnamese-German technical
cooperation project ‘Management of Natural Resources in the Coastal
Zone of Soc Trang Province’ held a workshop on Integrated Coastal Area
Management (ICAM) in Soc Trang City for local authorities and relevant
stakeholders related to the management of coastal resources and the
environment. The aim of this workshop was to assess stakeholders’
perceptions of coastal management issues for Soc Trang province and to
identify preferred and sustainable futures for coastal management
activities.
All relevant stakeholders for the ICAM process in Soc Trang
province, such as representatives from the Peoples Committee, the
various Departments, the Women’s Union etc., participated in the
working groups and shared their experiences, multiple objectives and
perspectives. The involvement of all relevant stakeholders aimed not
only at strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation but also at
integrating the different perspectives and concerns of all
stakeholders.
Prof Tim Smith, Director of the
Sustainability Research
Centre, and Mr Steve Gould, Lecturer Graduate Certificate in Futures
Studies, both from the University of the Sunshine Coast in
Australia, facilitated this workshop. They utilised a combined approach
of systems conceptualisation and futures thinking investigation to
assess current coastal management actions and to develop the preferred
futures of various sectors and communities in the Soc Trang province.
Through identifying preferred and likely futures under a range of
scenarios (including biophysical and socioeconomic factors) the
prioritisation of coastal management goals, strategies and action could
be determined.
