Inauguration of the bamboo walkway in Au Tho B and the study tour on co-management for Cu Lao Dung group

On 28th February, 2012, the inauguration of the bamboo walkway took place in Au Tho B village of Vinh Chau town. It is the first 160 m bamboo walkway in the village, made entirely from natural materials like bamboo and rattan. This bamboo walkway makes it easier for local people to go to the mudflat to collect aquatic resources. On the other hand, the walkway also helps reduce harmful impacts by people walking on young plants, thus, facilitating better forest protection.

Attending the event, beside local people, Au Tho B village also welcomed a visiting group of people from Cu Lao Dung. Since the co-management model in Au Tho B village, Vinh Hai commune, Vinh Chau town, has achieved some positive results in effective management and sustainable use of aquatic and mangrove forest resources, this model has been replicated and initiated into two other coastal areas in Tran De and Cu Lao Dung in 2012. Therefore, a study tour to Au Tho B village was organized for a group of more than 60 farmers (resource users) of Vo Thanh Van village, Cu Lao Dung and representatives of the local authority (head of the An Thanh Nam commune, head of the village, representatives of the Forest Protection district team, DARD district team...).

After the opening ceremony, people had a short field trip for the bamboo walkway sight-seeing. Then, people gathered at Mr. Thach Soal (leader of the Au Tho B co-management group)’s house to listen to presentations of Mr. Hoang Dinh Quoc Vu and Mr. Thach Soal on co-management process in Au Tho B, the benefits of mangrove forest protection and zonation. The agreed regulations for different zones in Au Tho B co-management were explained. By the end of the program, Mr. Thach Soal led an ordinary monthly meeting of the sub-group 4. The study tour was organized for local people and local authority of the Cu Lao Dung group to observe, listen and learn directly from reality and practical experience shared by the co-management group in Au Tho B village.

Meeting Ralph

On Wednesday afternoon, we received a short notice from Michelle that an American researcher just arrived in Soc Trang and would like to meet us that evening. So, we met and had dinner at Nhu Y.

Ralph can speak a little bit Vietnamese, and Michell too, thus we did have some "Vietnamese only" practicing chat at Minh Quan. It was quite fun!

The sweet soup shop

Sweet soup/sweet gruel or chè is a popular dessert in Vietnam, often cooked from nuts, beans, fruits, jelly and served with coconut cream.

"Chè Ngọc Trinh" is my favorite sweet soup shop in Soc Trang. Located in a dark corner at the conjunction of Lê Lợi street and a narrow road, it is just a sidewalk foodcart with about 8 - 10 small plastic tables. The sweet shop opens only in the evening. In daytime, right at that place is a motorbike repair shop. Thus, it's amazing to see things changing over a day, as if there was some miracle.

The foodcart serves various kinds of "chè", among them, i like "chè bưởi" the most, which is made from pomelo peel, mung beans and one ball of durian ice cream.

Not all of my friends like "chè". So, most of the time, i'm there alone, sitting on a little plastic chair, eating "chè bưởi" in open air, twilight atmosphere with mosquitoes flying around...

Cafe at Cánh Buồm Xanh

Sunday evening, 12.02.2012

So, it was the last day of Max in Soc Trang. Sounds sad, huh... We all will definitely miss him. Even Mr. Binh said that he would miss Max's cheerful laugh. Even the little children i met yesterday in the vegetarian restaurant asked me about him and said that they like him. Max is so popular now. Everybody likes him, (people in Kiem Lam like him very much as he can drink beer and play football with them :P).

But the good news is that... Max will come back to Soc Trang in May, this time, not as an intern any more but as a consultant for our project! Yeah! :)

Enjoy your travel in Vietnam and have a safe journey home, dear Max! Till we meet again!
